It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Reb Meyer Birnbaum z” to many as “Lieutenant Birnbaum,” after the book written about his life – growing up Jewish in America, liberating the DP camps, and resettling in Eretz Yisroel – Reb Meyer was a warm, endearing personality who shared his love of Hashem and simchas hachaim with the thousands of people he came in. LIEUTENANT BIRNBAUM IS NOT A PROPER AUTOBIOGRAPHY. The bulk of the book is a memoir of Reb Meyer's five years in the U.S. Army, from shortly after Pearl Harbor through the six months he spent in the DP camps, after he was already entitled to return to the United States and be discharged. Lieutenant Meyer Birnbaum zâ€ l has been an important part of my daily sixth-grade curriculum for over a decade. The first day of each new school year, I inform my talmidim that we will spend around ten minutes a day â€œlearning mussar.â€ There have been years when I heard at least one boy groan upon hearing this : Rabbi Shimon Finkelman. Birnbaum frequently retold this story as a tale of Jewish survival and bitachon. Eventually, Lt. Birnbaum realized that survivors just wanted people to listen to their stories.
